A single-origin, double-knit, worsted spun yarn produced from the fleeces of Scotch Mule sheep at the University of Glasgow's Cochno Farm. Situated around six miles from Glasgow, the Cochno Farm is key to the teaching programme at the School of Veterinary Medicine.
The fleeces are cleaned, carded, spun and dyed by the Natural Fibre Company. Each ball weighs 50g and is approximately 100 metres long.
The Cochno Wool Project emerged from research carried out in the School of Humanities by historians Lynn Abrams and Marina Moskowitz, which investigates the economies and cultures of Scottish knitted textiles through collaborations with heritage organisations, knitwear designers, artists and knitters. The project acknowledges the support of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow Chancellor's Fund.
